What is propeller polishing?

Propeller polishing is the in-water cleaning and smoothing of a vessel’s propeller to remove fouling and surface roughness. A rough propeller creates drag and disturbs water flow, which wastes fuel and reduces thrust. Polishing restores a smooth surface so the propeller works as designed, improving propulsion efficiency and lowering fuel consumption, all while the vessel stays afloat.

The propeller is small, the fuel penalty is not

The propeller is one of the smallest surfaces below the waterline, but it does the most work. When fouling and roughness build up on the blades, the propeller has to turn harder to deliver the same thrust. That shows up directly as higher fuel use and lost speed.

A smooth, polished propeller cuts that loss. The blades move cleanly through the water, thrust comes back, and the engine stops compensating for a surface it should not have to fight. It is one of the cheapest efficiency gains on the whole vessel, and it pairs naturally with a hull clean.

Divers remove fouling and growth from the blades and hub, working in the water with no need to lift the vessel.

Polishing

The blade surfaces are progressively smoothed to restore flow and reduce drag, taking the propeller back toward its working finish.

How does propeller polishing save fuel?

Can you polish a propeller in the water?

Yes. Propeller polishing is done by divers while the vessel stays afloat, alongside or at anchorage. There is no need to dry-dock the ship, which means no booking queue and no days lost to downtime for a routine polish.

How often should a propeller be polished?

It depends on how the vessel operates, where it spends time and how quickly fouling builds in those waters. Many operators polish on a regular cycle, often together with a hull clean, to keep efficiency from slipping between dry-dockings.
